It's a Wonderful, Magical Place...

Nope, not Disney...

It's our very own Downtown Library. Today we headed downtown to play at the park and walk around the lake. It was a beautiful day and we brought our lunch. Thursdays are the normal day we go to the library. The difference today was that I decided to take the kids to the downtown library since we were already that direction.

It was so fun to watch what a treat this was. They walked in the doors with a sense of awe. The Children's section is about the size of our entire library around the corner. So, they were in book heaven.

They kept me pretty busy as well. With all the choices, they needed a little more help finding what they were looking for. I don't think they are ever gonna want to go back to our dinky little one.

Who knew that the library could be such a treat?

Like Sister, Like Brother

The other day, Jordan walked into my room looking a little different. For a couple of years now, we have let his hair grow out and he seems to really like it (plus, Mommy really likes it, too!). Well, apparently, his hair was in his eyes and bothering him. So, he decided to cut it. He grabbed a big chunk in the front and went at it. There was not much repairing I could do other than to cut his whole head short. I can't believe how different he looks. I hope it grows fast. I didn't think I had to worry as much with him and scissors. I guess he has learned from his big sister the wonderful art :)

Box Checker

Are you one? I am.

In order to control every aspect of life, I have a list of boxes that I want to check off every day. The good side of this is that things normally get done that I want done. The down side is that when I live life that way, my heart isn't in it. That may work fine for doing the laundry and the dishes. It doesn't work out so well for the list that counts:

Read the Bible - check
Pray - check
Spend time with my husband - check
Teach my kids - check
Spend time with my kids - check
Sex - check
Go to church - check
Teach Sunday school - check
Lead small group - check

God has been challenging me in so many areas of my life and showing me how little it counts THAT I get it done but how much it matters HOW I get it done.

I don't know if you are a box checker too. I do know that is not what God intended and I look forward to Him teaching me HOW to do it better.

A Great Weekend of Growth

This last Friday and Saturday, I went to a conference at our church. It started on Friday evening. Most of the women went home Friday night and came back the next morning, but a couple friends and me decided to make it a sleepover at the church. We brought blow-up mattresses and just made ourselves at home. The only problem was that the church does not have any showers. So, in the morning we had to freshen up the European way :)

Anyway, the next morning we started again at 9 and went all the way until after 8 p.m. It was such a great time of refreshing my relationship with the Lord and VERY needed.

The overall theme was learning how to love God from a child like perspective. We focused on those verses that talk about having the faith of a child and only being able to enter the kingdom of Heaven if we are like these children. Then, we broke that down and discovered what that really looked like.

It was so eye-opening for me. God really used this time to reveal some stuff to me that needed revealing a long time ago. For some reason, He is just patient enough to wait around until we FINALLY figure it out. Praise the Lord!!

I think one of my favorite parts was the 45 minutes of silence. We were challenged to learn the spiritual discipline of silence. In our society, we want so badly for there to be music playing or the t.v. on or to be talking to someone. But, silence? We don't do that very well. I have to say, that 45 minutes of silence was like a breath of fresh air. God spoke more clearly to me than I have been able to hear in a long time.

Thank you, Abba, for pursuing me and finding me and not giving up on my lazy and stubborn heart.

Quality Books For Kids

Finding books for my kids to read has been such a challenge.  I know I may be a little pickier than some, but I just don't like those books that focus on nasty and disrespectful attitudes or boy/girl relationships.  I don't need any more pressure on my little 9,8 and 7 year old girls on having a boyfriend and all that goes along with that.

So, as we have starting going to the library regularly, we have started to explore the options available for the 2nd-5th grade reading level.  We have even found some that I think are great and my girls just haven't loved.  Then, we find the ones that I am not crazy about and the girls can't get enough.  But, we have been lucky enough to come to a couple of books that we both agree on and I thought I would share.

If you have any more suggestions, I would love to hear them.  I am always looking for something new.

Katie Kazoo (this is Avery's all time favorite) - These books are about a little girl named Katie who is transformed into someone different in each book.  She gets to see and live through the body and experiences of another person.  The books encourage her to appreciate another point of view and how to adjust when you feel like you don't know what you are doing.  They are written with just the right amount of humor and approved by this mom.

Jake Maddox (Morgan's new favorite) - These books are all about sports.  It doesn't matter what sport you are into, you can find a Jake Maddox book about it.  The thing I love about these books is that they are not specific to boys.  They have books from football to cheerleading and everything in between.  These books have excitement, sportsmanship and teamwork as some of their main themes.

American Girl (none of my girls are reading these right now, but they have and love them and they love the movies) -  The best part of these books is the historical background.  Each book takes a 9 year old girl's point of view on her life during a specific period of history.  Some of my favorites are Addy, Molly, Kit, Felicity and Samantha.  I think I have learned, as an adult, just as much as my kids when we read these.  They even keep me on the edge of my seat and I want to read what happens next.  We like to use these books as part of our school curriculum and read them together.

Magic Tree House (we own several of these but are not currently reading them) - These are ones I have to be careful with.  I have read some that I think are great and encourage my children to read.  Then, I have come across a couple that are very new age oriented and I won't allow them to read.

I have several other books that I look forward to them reading as they get older and develop more of a love for it.  This is an area that I try to encourage in spite of my personal lack of desire to read.  So, here are some of the ones for future reading.

The Chronicles of Narnia (my dad used to read these to me as a child and I have fond memories of it.  My kids have seen the movie and my mom has read one of the books to them already) - These books are written with a plot line very similar to the story of Jesus.  My children have loved these movies and I look forward to them becoming mature enough to enjoy the books even more.

The Hobbit (or any Tolkein book for that matter) - These books outline the ultimate battle between good and evil.  This is another book I heard growing up and I have thoroughly enjoyed the movies as an adult.

So, do you have any more ideas for a mom trying to teach her kids the love of reading?  If so, I would love to hear it.
